Right Advice, Wrong Person: A Story
Not all recommendations are created equal - sometimes the "right" advice is given to the wrong person, and it can have lasting consequences.
Take, for example, the athletic 20-year-old girl who came into our facility last year, struggling with a diagnosed lumbar disc herniation (L4/L5). She had suffered the injury performing a standard deadlift - prescribed by her trainer during a PT session!
While the deadlift itself is a great exercise and her trainer had explained the technique perfectly, the trainer didn't know that her left Gluteus Maximus (GM) was not firing properly. As a result the lumbar spine was repeatedly overloaded, eventually leading to a disc rupture.
If the trainer had known how to test for correct GM function, the deadlift would never have been prescribed and the injury could have been avoided.
What he should have done was first correct the activation sequence of the hip extensors and introduce GM isolation exercises, before finally moving on to more functional movements like the deadlift.
